Apple overcomes last hurdle, iPhone 5 cleared for sale in China as Android continues to dominate

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Michael Jackson's father, Joe Jackson, has suffered a stroke but is OK and resting in a Las Vegas hospital, a family friend said on Thursday. "He was doing well and says he's feeling OK," close family friend Brian Oxman told Reuters. Oxman, Michael Jackson's one-time attorney, said the 83-year-old patriarch of the pop music family started experiencing weakness on Wednesday while walking in a park near his home and was later admitted to a hospital. Jackson has a history of strokes, Oxman said. "He was talking fine," Oxman added. "He sounded excellent to me." A former ...

Senate backs quicker withdrawal from Afghanistan

(AP) ? Reflecting a war-weary nation, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday for an accelerated withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan after more than a decade of fighting.

The strong bipartisan vote of 62-33 sends a clear message to President Barack Obama and the military as they engage in high-stakes talks about the pace of drawing down the 66,000 U.S. troops there, with a White House announcement expected within weeks.

Although the vote was on a nonbinding amendment to a defense policy bill, its significance could not be discounted amid the current discussions.

Thirteen Republicans, including Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, the top GOP lawmaker on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, backed the measure.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., its chief sponsor, argued that al-Qaida is stronger in other parts of the world and that nation-building in Afghanistan has gone off track. His measure endorsed Obama's timetable to withdraw all combat troops by the end of 2014 but pressed for a quicker pace, without specifying how that would be achieved.

"It is time to end this war, end the longest war in United States history," Merkley said during Senate debate.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday the U.S. will need to keep troops in Afghanistan even after the combat mission ends in 2014 because al-Qaida is still present in the country and is trying to strengthen its influence.

He would not say how many American troops he thinks will be needed to conduct that mission, nor did he mention a time period.

"The goal here is an enduring presence therefore that will direct itself toward three important missions. One is obviously counterterrorism to insure that we continue to go after whatever al-Qaida targets remain in Afghanistan," Panetta told reporters at a Pentagon news conference.

He added that the United States also will have to train and assist the Afghan forces while providing support.

The overall defense bill authorizes $631 billion for weapons, ships, aircraft and a 1.7 percent pay raise for military personnel. The White House threatened to veto the legislation in its current form, citing limits on the president's authority in handling detainees at the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and restrictions on cuts to the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.

The Senate hopes to wrap up its version of the bill by week's end. It then would have to be reconciled with the legislation the House passed in May. The House bill calls for Obama to maintain a force of at least 68,000 troops in Afghanistan through the end of 2014.

Late Thursday, the Senate revived last year's debate over how to handle terror suspects and whether restrictions interfere with the president's powers as commander in chief.

Lawmakers approved an amendment that would prevent the transfer of detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to prisons in the United States. The vote was 54-41, with several Democrats vulnerable in the 2014 elections voting with Republicans.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., argued that the 166 terror suspects, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the self-styled mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, should remain at the U.S. naval facility and not be transferred to any facility on American soil.

Responding to Ayotte, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the United States not only can but has handled terrorist suspects, with 180 now languishing in super maximum prisons. Feinstein complained that the measure would erase the president's flexibility.

"I don't think the right thing to do is to tie anyone's hands," she said.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., who had pushed for several of the provisions on terror suspects in last year's defense bill, said Ayotte's measure was "unwise in terms of our national security." He also warned that the provision was certain to draw a presidential veto.

In fact, the administration, in threatening to veto the bill, strongly objected to a provision restricting the president's authority to transfer terror suspects from Guantanamo to foreign countries. The provision is in current law.

The White House said the provisions were "misguided when they were enacted and should not be renewed."

Current law denies suspected terrorists, including U.S. citizens seized within the nation's borders, the right to trial and subjects them to the possibility they would be held indefinitely. It reaffirms the post-Sept. 11 authorization for the use of military force that allows indefinite detention of enemy combatants.

An unusual coalition of liberal Democrats and libertarian Republicans backed an amendment by Feinstein that said the government may not detain a U.S. citizen or legal resident indefinitely without charge or trial even with the authorization to use military force or declaration of war.

Feinstein recalled the dark days of World War II when the United States forcibly removed thousands of Japanese-Americans and placed them in permanent internment camps amid unfounded fears that they were spies and a national security threat.

Civil rights groups said the measure did not go far enough, but it was approved on a 67-29 vote with the backing of conservative Sens. Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Mike Lee, R-Utah.

The Senate eliminated one provision from the bill that had attracted White House objections. In a strong bipartisan vote Wednesday, senators voted to allow Pentagon investment in alternative fuels.

For-profit colleges spend big on marketing

10 hrs.

Google's biggest advertiser is neither a bank nor a retailer.?

It's the for-profit University of Phoenix, which has recently been spending nearly $400,000 a day on ads, according to search analytics firm SpyFu, more than any financial firm or retailer, the traditional big spenders on online advertising.?

That kind of spending may seem surprising coming from a college, but marketing has become vital for the university and its for-profit rivals as enrollments plummet and they fight back against a host of criticisms, including low job-placement rates.?

Colleges such as University of Phoenix, the industry leader owned by Apollo Group Inc, will not only have to boost enrollments to reverse their fortunes, analysts say. They will also need to consider cutting tuition fees as well as continue to slash costs and take market share from rivals.?

Operators of other for-profit colleges, whose ranks include the Washington Post Co's Kaplan business, DeVry Inc and ITT Educational Services Inc, are also boosting their spending on marketing and are among the 25 biggest advertisers on Google.?

But no one is spending like the University of Phoenix, which doubled its spending on Google ads to about $380,000 per day on average between Oct. 12 and Nov. 12, compared with $170,000 a day in the previous month, according to SpyFu data - which Apollo describes as "gross speculation."?

"I have witnessed several versions of this cycle but none as extreme as this," said Trace Urdan, an analyst with Wells Fargo Securities, who has been covering the U.S. for-profit education industry for about 15 years.?

"We are going to see more pointed efforts at marketing and more price competition in an effort to try to capture more market share both from each other as well as from traditional schools," Urdan said.?

Emphasis on bottom line
Increased marketing alone will not be enough to fatten fast-shrinking profit margins and increase enrollments, however. Lower tuition fees and increased specialization of the type of programs offered, along with further streamlining of operations, will also be necessary, analysts say.?

Industry bellwether University of Phoenix, which offers courses at about 230 campuses as well as online, announced plans last month to shut about half its locations and cut 800 jobs in order to save about $300 million a year by 2014.?

New enrollments in the Apollo system are down nearly 50 percent in the past two years. As of Aug. 31, enrollment totaled about 328,000.?

Career Education Corp, which owns American InterContinental University and the Le Cordon Bleu colleges, and Lincoln Educational Services Corp have also announced closures.?

The $25 billion industry, which typically serves adults looking for a career change or a program to enhance job skills, is reeling after government investigations revealed fraud related to financial aid, worryingly high student debt loads and low rates of graduation and job placement.?

"Many for-profit colleges make decisions that prioritize their bottom line, even when those decisions limit their students' opportunities for academic success," a U.S. Senate report said earlier this year.?

Tuition fees, and therefore profits, is one area under pressure as potential students need to be convinced to take out loans in an uncertain job market.?

Apollo, whose stock has lost about 65 percent of its value this year, implemented a tuition freeze earlier this year and promised students it will not increase prices through the course of their programs.?

Apollo is also looking at different cost models, with a view to serving segments of the population that it cannot serve with current University of Phoenix tuition prices.?

"We have certainly seen a lot more competition at the lower end of the price scale, and that's something we are focusing on," Apollo spokesman Mark Brennar said, while declining to offer specifics.?

Wells Fargo's Urdan said it is likely that Apollo wants to compete in the low-cost end of the market by building a second brand, which it would likely do by acquiring another college rather than starting from scratch.?

Lower margins the norm?
As colleges lower their revenue base by cutting tuition fees even as they spend more on marketing, lower margins could become the norm, analysts say. That has spooked investors already worried about sliding enrollments.?

The S&P 1500 Education Services index has lost three-quarters of its value since April 2010, including a 50 percent decline in 2012.?

Some for-profit colleges already differentiate themselves in the crowded higher-education market by offering programs in a particular field or by targeting students of a particular background, and that trend could accelerate.?

American Public Education, for example, is known for enrolling those who work in the military and public services, while Universal Technical Institute offers programs related to the automotive industry.?

For-profit colleges play up their links to employers to attract students who may otherwise opt for traditional or community colleges, said Rob Lytle, head of the education practice at advisory firm Parthenon Group.?

"They are about getting people ... employability skills, and I think they are going to be focusing tighter on that," said Lytle.?

Depressed about Your Internet Business?Spend More Time ...

I was reminded the other day about the importance of list building for your internet business. And it got it me thinking (once again) that if anyone is to be successful in internet marketing? they cannot do it if they do not have a strong, loyal, list.

Now the very definition of a list in the internet marketing world is primarily an email list. However in today?s social media times, we can and should also include lists from Facebook fan page followers or Twitter followers, YouTube, etc.

But let?s not go crazy?nothing compares to having a strong email list. There are exceptions and you can even combined the two in some instances. I will give you that but I?m convinced that there is nothing more important than having a strong email list.? Period.

I would say the second most important thing to success in online marketing would be web traffic. But if you have a big list of loyal followers you can just about create your own traffic from it with one simple email.

So if you are feeling depressed about your internet marketing business? If it?s not going exactly how you planned it, then it?s time to focus on building your list today.

Most people who fail online do so because they have failed to build a list. And this should be the backbone of your online business.

In fact I?d say just stop everything you were planning to do and concentrate on this only. Here?s what the list can do fit you.

  • The list brings you power.
  • The list brings you independence.
  • The list brings you leverage.
  • The list brings you affiliates.
  • The list brings you traffic.
  • The list brings you partnerships.
  • Oh yeah? The list brings you Money!

And from the very beginning of the internet marketing industry, this has never changed. And contrary to the few people who may tell you otherwise, this will never, ever change.

I mean really? We?re talking about free advertising. You never have to pay for this advertising. Now you can charge others to advertise to your list? Again leverage. But that?s something for another article.

Just remember that no internet business can survive without a loyal email list. Large or small, it doesn?t matter. It can?t be done without The List.??Anyone who tells you otherwise, doesn?t have your best interest at heart.

So be depressed no longer?start your plan to build your list and thus, your online business to greater heights starting now.

So it?s build your list or die. Make that your new motto. Go ahead and make it happen.? See more on listbuilding here.

Now the internet marketer that reminded me of this once again, was the Gillamonster, Matt Gill. So I felt it only right to show you guys his offer? It?s closing soon so check it out.

Gov. Chris Christie's approval rate soars post-Sandy

If there's anything that Walmart didn't need on Black Friday weekend, it was a jaw-dropping headline about somebody dying in their parking lot after a run-in with a couple of employees. Unfortunately for the big box retailer, that's exactly what happened on early Sunday morning at a store in Lithonia, Georgia.

George readies Spartans for unfamiliar NCAA Tournament opponent

By Matt Sheehan | Published 12 hours ago

Head coach Cathy George talks with the her team during the volleyball game against Ohio State Oct. 20, 2012 at Jenison Field House. MSU lost the game 3-1 and is set to play against Indiana on Oct. 26. Danyelle Morrow/The State News

When the MSU volleyball team found out they were slated to play San Diego in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Spartans didn?t know very much about their next opponent.

So little, in fact, that most people at the viewing party were unsure of little more than the geographic location of their tournament foe.

The team that plays in the West Coast Conference held a lot of mystery, but head coach Cathy George still knows the bare basics about San Diego (21-6 overall, 13-3 WCC) heading into the team?s NCAA Tournament matchup.

?San Diego is a very defensive-minded team, and we knew that right off the get-go,? George said.

Some other quick facts that the Spartans (23-9, 11-9) found out early was how successful of a season their upcoming opponent has had. After compiling a 13-3 record in their conference, the Toreros claimed a share of the WCC title after a win over then-No. 13 Brigham Young.

Since finding out the pairings on Sunday, the Spartans had three days to scout and get a better idea of the squad from ?Anchorman? Ron Burgundy?s home town.

?They definitely are led by their middle attack and (junior middle hitter Katie Hoekman), and they really have a lot of balance in their offense,? George said.

The Toreros also are known for their offensive balance, as five players average more than two kills per set.

Another discovery that the Spartans found is that San Diego plays an identical style to them, playing in a 6-2 system, which allows for six players to act as hitters while two others act as setters. The style is conducive to well-rounded players with multiple skill sets on the floor, combining dynamic talent with general versatility.

Junior outside hitter Lauren Wicinski believes that MSU is the only team in the Big Ten to run that system, and also mentioned that San Diego plays a different variation of the style than the Spartans do.

?We know they run a 6-2 like us, so they are very similar to us, but their blocking is a little bit different than what we do,? Wicinski said. ?They play a little different of a style than us, but they are going to have to get used to our style as well.?

Despite not going up against a lot of teams that run a 6-2, sophomore libero Kori Moster said that the Spartans will not have to make a lot of adjustments during the match against San Diego.

?That?s the beauty of our system,? Moster said. ?We really don?t have to change our game plan in order to exploit a lot of the teams that we play.?

The Spartans head out to Los Angeles to take on the Toreros on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at UCLA?s New Pauley Pavilion.

Euro zone, IMF reach deal on cutting long-term Greek debt

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund clinched agreement on a new debt target for Greece on Monday in a breakthrough towards releasing an urgently needed tranche of loans to the near-bankrupt economy, officials said.

After nearly 10 hours of talks at their third meeting on the issue in as many weeks, Greece's international lenders agreed to reduce Greek debt by 40 billion euros, cutting it to 124 percent of gross domestic product by 2020, via a package of steps.

The deal should open the way for a major aid installment needed to recapitalize Greece's teetering banks and enable the government to pay wages, pensions and suppliers in December. Greece could receive up to 44 billion euros, although it remains unclear if the full amount will be paid in one go.

To reduce the debt pile, the ministers agreed to cut the interest rate on loans to Greece and return 11 billion euros to Athens in profits from European Central Bank purchases of Greek government bonds on the secondary market.

They also agreed to help Greece to buy back its own bonds from private investors at an expected cost of around 35 cents in the euro, officials said.

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said on leaving the talks: "I very much welcome the decisions taken by the ministers of finance. They will certainty reduce the uncertainty and strengthen confidence in Europe and in Greece."

Details of the agreement were to be announced at a news conference after the meeting ended.

The euro strengthened against the dollar after news of a deal was reported by Reuters.

"We've filled the financing gap until the end of program in 2014," one official engaged with the talks said. A second official confirmed the figures.

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras said earlier that Athens had fulfilled its part of the deal by enacting tough austerity measures and economic reforms, and it was now up to the lenders to do their part.

"I'm certain we will find a mutually beneficial solution today," he said on arrival for the marathon talks.

Greece, where the euro zone's debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is the currency area's most heavily indebted country, despite a big "haircut" this year on privately-held bonds. Its economy has shrunk by nearly 25 percent in five years.

Negotiations had been stalled over how Greece's debt, forecast to peak at 190-200 percent of GDP in the coming two years, could be cut to a more sustainable 120 percent by 2020.

The agreed figure fell slightly short of that goal, and the IMF was still insisting that euro zone ministers should make a firm commitment to further steps to reduce the debt stock if Athens implements its adjustment program faithfully.

The key question remains whether Greek debt can become sustainable without euro zone governments having to write off some of the loans they have made to Athens.

A source familiar with IMF thinking said the global lender was demanding immediate measures to cut Greece's debt by 20 percentage points of GDP, with a commitment to do more to reduce the debt stock in a few years if Greece fulfills its program.

To reduce the debt to 124 percent by 2020, the ministers were putting together a package of steps including a debt buyback funded by a euro zone rescue fund, reducing the interest rate on loans and returning euro zone central bank 'profits' to Greece.

Germany and its northern European allies have so far rejected any idea of forgiving official loans to Athens.

DEBT RELIEF "NOT ON TABLE"

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters that a debt cut was legally impossible, not just for Germany but for other euro zone countries, if it was linked to a new guarantee of loans.

"You cannot guarantee something if you're cutting debt at the same time," he said. That did not preclude possible debt relief at a later stage if Greece completed its adjustment program and no longer needs new loans.

The source familiar with IMF thinking said a loan write-off once Greece has established a track record of compliance would be the simplest way to make its debt viable, but other methods such as forgoing interest payments, or lending at below market rates and extending maturities could all help.

The German banking association (BDB) said a fresh "haircut" or forced reduction in the value of Greek sovereign debt, must only happen as a last resort.

Two European Central Bank policymakers, vice-president Vitor Constancio and executive board member Joerg Asmussen, said debt forgiveness was not on the agenda for now.

The ministers agreed to reduce interest on already extended bilateral loans from the current 150 basis points above financing costs to 50 bps once Greece achieves a primary budget surplus of 4.5 percent of GDP.

Another option considered, which could cut Greek debt by almost 17 percent of GDP, was to defer interest payments on loans to Greece from the EFSF, a temporary bailout fund, by 10 years. It was not immediately clear if that had been agreed.

By forgoing profits on its Greek bond portfolio, bought at a deep discount, the ECB could cut the debt pile by a further 4.6 percent by 2020, a document prepared for meeting showed.

Not all euro zone central banks are willing to forgo their profits, however, the German Bundesbank among them.

Before the meetings, officials had spoken of a 10 billion euro buy-back of Greek debt, that would achieve a net reduction of about 20 billion euros in the debt stock, although the potential gain has fallen as prices have risen since the idea was first mooted.

FORGIVING OFFICIAL LOANS?

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

An opinion poll published on Monday showed Greece's anti-bailout SYRIZA party with a four-percent lead over the Conservatives who won election in June, adding to uncertainty over the future of reforms.

German paper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that euro zone ministers were considering a write-down of official loans for Greece from 2015, but gave no sources, and a euro zone official said such an option was never seriously discussed.

Can Restoration Hardware Legally Knock Off the Navy Chair?

The Emeco 1006 Navy Chair and Restoration Hardware's "Naval Chair."

Emeco's 1006 Navy chair (left) and Restoration Hardware's naval chair

Product images by Emeco and Restoration Hardware.

The Emeco 1006, also called the ?Navy chair,? is an aluminum side chair produced by the Electric Machine and Equipment Company (Emeco) in Hanover, Pa. The chair was commissioned by the U.S. Navy in World War II for use on warships: The procurement contract specified that the chair had to be able to withstand torpedo blasts to the side of a destroyer.

After the war, Emeco began selling its Navy chair to the public.?The original design never sold particularly well, but over the years Emeco?s chair carved out a small niche as a piece of high-end (that is, expensive) design of the sort you?ll see featured in Dwell magazine.

That is until Restoration Hardware got into the act. Recently the big furniture retailer began selling a look-alike Navy chair, which it refers to as the ?standard aluminum side chair.? (It previously referred to it as the ?naval chair.?) The Emeco original is $455. The Restoration knockoff is $129. At that lower price?and given Restoration Hardware?s ubiquity and marketing muscle?the Navy chair was poised to go mainstream.

That was something Emeco was not going to take sitting down. The company has now filed suit, accusing Restoration Hardware of violating its trademarks. Restoration Hardware has apparently responded by taking the chair off its website. They shouldn?t have. The lawsuit is very likely meritless. And it points to the problem in granting overly broad rights in names and designs via the trademark system?especially since trademarks, unlike copyrights or patents, can last forever.

Let?s turn to the dispute itself. First, Emeco?s claim to a trademark on the term ?Navy chair? is weak. Why? Because over the years that has become a generic label for this type of all-metal, 1940s-style chair, rather than a name that immediately conjures up a Pennsylvania company named Emeco. And in American law, if a product?s name becomes generic?such as aspirin, linoleum, thermos, or zipper?it can no longer be trademarked. Lawyers call this ?genericide,? and the fear of becoming generic is one reason Kleenex is always reminding you that they sell ?Kleenex-brand tissues.? The makers of Kleenex are trying to save their brand from genericide by reminding you that Kleenex is a particular brand of tissues, not a generic name for tissues.

In any event, Restoration Hardware isn?t using the name ?Navy chair? anymore, so even if Emeco wins on this claim, it?s a pyrrhic victory?Restoration Hardware will be entitled to go on selling the chair under the unexciting but perfectly serviceable ?standard aluminum side chair? label.

But Emeco has a second claim. It argues that it has a trademark on the chair?s design as well as its name. This claim is also a stretch. The Supreme Court has been very skeptical of such ?trade dress? claims in which a firm asserts ownership over how a product looks. The court has said that firms can claim trademark rights on the design of products only if they have achieved what lawyers refer to as ?secondary meaning??that is, if the design is recognized by a substantial number of consumers as synonymous with the product itself.?

This is possible but very rare. The sinuous design of a Coca-Cola bottle is protected, for example, because people widely recognize a bottle of that shape as synonymous with Coke. Is Emeco?s Navy chair the home furnishing equivalent of a Coke bottle? No. It may be that a small number of industrial-design fans believe that chairs that look like the Navy chair come from a single source (such as Emeco). But actually they don?t?the Navy chair has been knocked off for years by a number of firms. Here?s a knockoff version by Advanced Interior Designs. Here?s another by Interiortrade. And here are knockoff Navy chairs in various colors by Globe West. Matt Blatt has done Navy chair knockoffs as well. Heck, at one point, even mega-retailer Target was doing a knockoff.?

For the same reason that the Navy chair name is probably generic (a lot of firms have produced very similar chairs under that name), the design almost certainly doesn?t indicate any single source of the product (because consumers have been getting their Navy chairs from a variety of sources for years). The bottom line is that Emeco can?t stop Restoration Hardware from knocking off the Navy chair.

Sandy washed away job market gains

13 hrs.

It takes a lot to knock the U.S. economy off course.

One month after being clobbered by the largest storm ever?recorded in the North Atlantic, it?s becoming a little clearer just how big an economic impact Superstorm Sandy is having.

As the cleanup of visible damage continues around his office in lower Manhattan, Brian Drum is tallying up the damage to the job market.

?Hiring has slowed down tremendously ? it?s almost like it?s come to a halt,? said Brian Drum, CEO of Drum Associates, an executive recruiting firm. ?The jobs seem to be open, and the inventory seems to be available in terms of competent people. But companies are not making decisions.?

Those hiring decisions will have to wait for many potential employers ? still without power, communications or a place to issue paychecks. In New York City alone, about a third of the 100 million square feet of downtown office space was still out of operation a week after the storm, according to brokerage Jones Lang LaSalle.?That?s roughly the total office space available in downtown Houston.?

Sandy hit the East Coast on Oct. 29 and disrupted businesses from North Carolina to Maine. The nearly 1,000-mile-wide storm cut a wide path of death and destruction, killing 113 people, through a region that represents about a quarter of the U.S. economy.

Heavy rainfall combined with a storm surge, high winds, inland flooding and fires to leave millions without power and tens of thousands homeless. Thousands of retailers and restaurants were closed, many for good. Some 20,000 airline flights were canceled. Miles of roads and railways were destroyed or damaged. The storm forced shutdowns of financial markets and several nuclear power reactors.

With so many businesses closed, many of the roughly 10 million workers in coastal counties were tossed out of work. On Wednesday, the government reported that more than 75,000 workers filed a new unemployment claim last week in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, mostly in the construction, food service and transportation industries.

After a healthy pickup in hiring in the second half of the year, some analysts expect Sandy to wash away a big chunk of employment in the monthly jobs data for November, due out Dec. 7.

?We are concerned there may be an acute hurricane impact on November payrolls,? Deutsche Bank economist Joseph LaVorgna warned earlier this week in a note to clients.

LaVorgna noted that, following Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, the pace of new hires saw a downward swing of?127,000. He estimates the November report will show that hiring slowed to just 25,000 new jobs from a gain of 171,000 in October.

To be sure, there are other reasons for the pause in hiring decisions. Even before the storm hit, the ongoing recession in Europe and slower growth in China has brought a coordinated slowdown in the global economy. The November election did little to break the political gridlock over the federal budget and tax policy.

?I think people are still waiting to see whether there?s going to be compromise between the two factions in Washington,? said Drum. ?But the situation was certainly exacerbated by the storm. ?

A month later, ?thousands of families are still homeless and tens of millions of dollars of repairs have yet to be made. Despite lingering shortages of gasoline and isolated power outages, the region?s economy is back up and running.

?It wasn?t the massive disruption in the supply chain that might have been thought, given the severity of the storm,? said Andrew Tananbaum, executive chairman at Capital Business Credit, a lender that services the retail sector.

With the insurance claims process just getting underway, industry estimates ? of as much as $50 billion in property?damage???are still preliminary.

?This is the fourth loss we?ve had of significance in the last couple of years which is outside the models we might use to ascertain the cost of such extreme losses,? said Stephen Catlin, CEO at Catlin Group, a Bermuda-based insurer. ?There are still people without houses to live in and still people without electricity. It?s going to take a few more weeks before we?re really clear as to how much damage and how much insured loss has been incurred.?

Apart from the visible destruction, the economic impact has been widespread. The chaos unleashed by the storm has already begun showing up in the monthly data from industrial production and retail sales.

The Federal Reserve reported that the nation?s total industrial output shrank by 0.4 percent in October, largely because of storm-related production shutdowns at utilities and makers of chemicals, food, transportation equipment and computers and electronic products.

Airlines sustained hundreds of millions of dollars in losses from more than 20,000 canceled flights. United and Delta reported last week the two carriers lost a combined $135 million in revenues from the storm. The shutdown of New York City?s subway and commuter train network cost the city about $50 million in lost revenues, according to estimates from IBISWorld. The market research firm also figures the financial services industry lost $150 million in revenues after the storm knocked the NASDAQ and New York Stock Exchanges offline for two days ? the first such weather-related outage in more than a century.

Mortgage applications fell?by?almost 40 percent in Connecticut, 50 percent in New?York and more than 60 percent in New Jersey in?the week after the storm, according to the?Mortgage Bankers Association.

Retailers were among the hardest hit. A surge in sales of critical supplies and equipment before the storm was more than offset by a week of closed stores. Just a few days of lost business in October put a dent in the government?s monthly retail sales tally.

November sales data will show an even bigger impact. Retail spending (not including cars) dropped in the Northeast by about 20 percent in the week following the storm, according to data collected by MasterCard. But that drop in spending will be offset as households hit by the storm spend to repair and replace damaged items, including waterlogged cars and trucks.

?A large number of dealers are back up and running, but there are still dealerships facing difficulties???just as there are neighborhoods still facing significant problems,? said Paul Taylor, chief?economist?at the National?Automobile?Dealers Association.

Taylor said it?s too soon to know how many cars will have to be replaced, but initial estimates put the figure at between 100,000 and 250,000. He also estimates that the increased demand for used cars will push up prices up by about 1.5 percent nationally ? with bigger increases in states like New York and New Jersey,?where demand is strongest.

Increased spending on repairs and shopping trips delayed by Sandy?could help boost sales in December. But it may also cut into savings that were intended for holiday shopping.

That means nervous store managers may have to slash prices to avoid getting stuck with unsold goods, according to Jack Kleinhenz, chief economist for the National Retail Federation.

?I would imagine that those retailers in the area that were affected by the storm are going to be more prone to try and move their promotions and incentives out there,? he said.

The wider economic outlook is harder to assess, as the stimulus effect of rebuilding is spread over many months. But Sandy?s economic headwind at the end of 2012 could provide a boost to the first half of next year.

?With housing strong and vehicle sales likely to rebound as people replace Sandy-destroyed autos, the economy is on the rise,? said economist Joel Naroff. ?The only thing we have to fear is Washington itself.?

Energy efficient windows ? Home Improvement: House Plans

November 20th, 2012 by admin Leave a reply ?

I must change the windows of my home. My old windows aren't bad looking. But although they go well with the house and I still like them, they are lacking the much needed energy efficiency. Heating and cooling my home takes five times longer than it is supposed to. I talked to the contractor that I always use, and after inspecting them, he told me that is time for windows upgrade. Because I really like the window design I have, I went in search for the similar window style only with a better energy efficiency index. I found something that looks promising at the Nitro Windows store my next door neighbor suggested. I?ll see soon enough how they will do.?

Holiday shoppers descend on Black Friday deals

Black Friday got off to its earliest start ever as many shoppers cleared the table of Thanksgiving dinner and headed straight to the malls and big-box retailers across the nation to snag goods at bargain prices.

More than 10,000 people were wrapped around Macy's flagship store in New York City before the doors opened at midnight this morning. Across the country, up to 147 million people are expected to shop at some point this weekend.

Thousands lined up outside a Target in Chicago ahead of a 9 p.m. start time.

"I'm here because my mom is making me, because she said I couldn't eat any of the Thanksgiving food if I didn't hold her place in line," Alex Horton told ABC News station WLS-TV in Chicago Thursday.

Many critics panned the early start this year, saying it cuts into quality time that should be spent with family and friends.

PHOTOS: Black Friday Shoppers Hit Stores

Chicago resident Claudia Fonseca got creative and took Thanksgiving to go.

"We brought a plate, but that's about it, we've been here since 11 a.m. And that's it," Fonseca told WLS Thursday.

Black Friday makes headlines every year, but not always for the right reason as violence has become linked to the day after Thanksgiving tradition.

In Los Angeles, police aren't taking any chances with the LAPD deploying dozens of extra officers around the city to make sure things don't get out of hand.

Ontario Mills shopping mall in Los Angeles opened at midnight last year, but decided to give excited shoppers a two-hour head start to get their hands on the cut-rate deals, especially for electronics.

"This is my first year," Gabriela Mendoza told ABC News station KABC-TV Thursday. "I tried to stay away from this but I've heard it's really exciting so, I'm looking forward to it."

Things have been relatively calmer compared to the incident last year when a woman was accused of unleashing pepper spray on other shoppers in a dash for electronics at Walmart in Los Angeles.

The Black Friday madness kicked off Thursday when a south Sacramento, Calif., Kmart opened its doors at 6 a.m. Thursday. A shopper in a line of people that had formed nearly two hours earlier reportedly threatened to stab the people around him.

At two Kmarts in Indianapolis, police officers were called in after fights broke out among shoppers trying to score vouchers for a 32-inch plasma TV going for less than $200, police told ABC News affiliate RTV6. No injuries or arrest were made.

Stores have taken preventive measures in hopes of shoppers and tempers at ease, where safety is the main concern for everyone involved.

Mall of America has tightened its Black Friday policies and will bar unaccompanied minors from the megamall all day today. After a chair-throwing melee last year after Christmas, which was captured on smartphones and posted online, the mall is taking steps to prevent any repeat.

At the Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento, Calif., security planned to place barricades at the mall entrance to control the crowds and officials planned to double the number of security officers.

ABC News' John Schriffen and Sarah Netter contributed to this report.

ShopSmart MagazineYonkers, NY ? The selection of toys can be overwhelming for shoppers deciding on the perfect gift?many have digital components and interactive features, but are they fun and easy to use?

The December 2012 issue of ShopSmart, from Consumer Reports, highlights 12 cool toys with a tech twist for kids in different age ranges starting at age 3 and tells why they may make a great gift this holiday season.

  • VTech Cogsley Learning Robot, $40.00 (ages 3 to 6) is a sturdy little robot that movesm talks, sings and teaches.? Children can tap this cute robot on the head to wake him up, then select a learning game to play.? Cogsley responds to a twist of the ears, eyes and nose??and chips can be dropped into a slot above his nose to answer questions or learn new info.? Two big pluses for parents: auto shutoff to conserve batteries when kids wander away, and volume control to preserve sanity.
  • Crayola Digital Light Designer, $60.00 (ages 6 and older) is a dark plastic dome??but when turned on is illuminated by a spinning array of LED lights.? Kids can create colorful designs on the dome by using the included stylus (powered by two AAA batteries), save up to 50 of their favorites and animate their drawings or play one of the 50 games included.?
