The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is reminding people to be scrupulous about keeping their garbage cans and other food sources around their homes secure as hyperactive Florida black bears stock up on calories for the winter. Bears in the fall begin a natural process in which they scarf down about 25,000 calories daily. With bear-related complaints are on the rise, Fish and Wildlife officials want people to take precautions to avoid contact with hungry bears. Tips include feeding pets indoors, removing fallen fruit from the ground and keeping garbage stored in a shed, garage or a wildlife-resistant container.
