States, GOP Lawmakers Eye Tougher Election Laws

The run-up to the 2012 elections was one of court battles and legislative jockeying over Republican-backed voter ID and elections laws that critics called bald-faced attempts to suppress turnout and disenfranchise Democratic voters.

Now with 2013 legislative sessions getting under way, those fights show no signs of slowing.

Lawmakers in as many as a dozen states are considering new or tougher voter ID laws this year, many of which are expected to become law despite criticism similar moves received in 2012. Indeed, it already seems likely more states will have stricter elections administration schemes come 2014 than there were just last year.

In North Carolina, for example, a voter ID requirement is expected to easily pass the GOP-dominated legislature and gain the favor of new Republican Governor Pat McCrory this session. Former Democratic Governor Bev Perdue vetoed a similar measure last year. In Virginia, Republican lawmakers, including two GOP candidates for attorney general, are proposing to strengthen the state?s identification requirement that currently allows utility bills, bank statements or other paperwork.

Lawmakers in Montana, Nevada, Iowa, Idaho, Missouri, West Virginia, Arkansas and elsewhere are also considering voter ID proposals of varying scope this year.

The movement in the states comes as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to hear arguments on a pair of elections cases in coming weeks, ensuring that tension over elections law will remain in the months ahead.

In late February, the court will hear a challenge to a key provision of the Voting Rights Act that gives the federal government preclearance authority over elections law changes in jurisdictions with a history of voter discrimination. That provision has proven significant in either forcing states to moderate voter ID laws (such as in the case of South Carolina) or in blocking particularly harsh ones (as happened with Texas? law).

Then in March, the court will hear arguments over an Arizona law that required voters to show proof of citizenship to register to vote or cast their ballots. A federal court said the requirement violated the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, which Congress passed to standardize registration and encourage turnout. Arizona has called the decision an overreach that infringed on its authority to regulate elections; the outcome could be significant in future state-federal disputes over election administration.

The battles extend into state courts as well, where opponents will continue to mount legal challenges to block or weaken the requirements. And in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, already-enacted voter ID laws remain before the courts.

Last year, the Wisconsin Supreme Court decided against a fast-tracked decision that might have allowed the requirement to be in place on Election Day, leaving the matter unresolved. An April election, in which state Supreme Court Justice Patience Roggensack (considered a member of the court?s 4-3 conservative majority) faces re-election, could swing the eventual outcome.

In Pennsylvania, a hearing this summer will decide whether to permanently strike down the state?s voter ID law or allow it for future elections. A Commonwealth Court judge blocked the measure on narrow grounds last year because the state was found to have too little time to properly implement it. Because of that, most expect it will eventually be allowed to proceed.

And so it seems the greatest momentum and prospect for change remains with those pushing voter ID and similar measures, particularly as courts have generally approved such laws in recent years. But the news hasn?t been completely dire for anti-voter ID and elections advocates.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who was under fire for paring back early voting last year, has since come out in favor of more early voting. In Ohio, the scene of many elections battles, Secretary of State Jon Husted has ordered local governments to convene formal hearings to document alleged voter fraud. Advocates have long doubted the existence of any such fraud, but many say forcing governments to compile evidence, rather than allowing hearsay to stand in its place, could prove helpful in the broader debate.

Still, such positive signs for advocates are small compared to the calls for national elections reform that took hold after Election Day. On the night he was re-elected, President Obama vowed to advocate for reforms to help stem irregularities, long lines and other issues that plagued polling places last November.

A few sweeping proposals have been proposed in Congress, but have so far gained little traction. They include standardized administration, competitive grants and even a national requirement for same-day registration. But as with many other issues in Washington, they?ve become quickly embroiled in squabbling over spending, federal overreach and partisanship.

(AP) ? For all the bright lights and razzle-dazzle of the Las Vegas locale, the most illuminating stretches in Michael Mayer's showy new production of "Rigoletto" at the Metropolitan Opera occurred when the three commanding singers were left alone at the front of the stage and the splashy scenery receded into the background.

The opening-act fan dancers were distracting and the third-act topless stripper/hooker was gratuitous. Countess Ceprano resembled Marilyn Monroe and the Count of Monterone was an Arab sheik. Gilda was carried off in a sarcophagus when she was kidnapped, then died in the trunk of a Cadillac Coupe Deville.

Clearly this wasn't the "Rigoletto" that played at the Met 841 previous times over 129 years.

Overall, Mayer's transfer of Verdi's first great middle-period opera from 16th-century Mantua to a 1960 hotel and casino on the Strip resulted in straightforward storytelling. The gamble with regietheater was largely successful, an entertaining, bold rendition that some will conclude lacks new insight and others will find frenetic and fun. The notoriously conservative Met audience mostly cheered the Tony-winning director following Monday night's production premiere, with only a few boos scattered in.

In her first performance since giving birth to her second child in October, Diana Damrau gave a searing, loving portrayal of Gilda, a total melding of her silvery soprano with the persona of a vulnerable, confused young girl, unsure how to deal with her overprotective father and sexual awakening amid the bawdy decadence of Sin City.

Zeljko Lucic let loose a fierce and pained baritone as Rigoletto, combining with Damrau for an unforgettable second-act duet filled with emotion, inflection and even tears. Piotr Beczala as the Duke was a breezy, sleazy leader of the Rat Pack, a Frank Sinatra-type lurching from bender to hookup. His arias were winning and convincing, his tenor perhaps underpowered by the slightest tad.

Even before opening night, there was sharp disagreement among aficionados over Mayer's switch from the Renaissance Palazzo Ducale to a casino floor filled with slot machines, gambling tables and faux neon. The photos and videos posted on the Met's Facebook page inflamed factions pro and con that contemptuously regard each other as Luddites and Jacobins.

The locale of "Rigoletto" changed even before its first performance in 1851 ? Francesco Maria Piave adapted the libretto from an 1832 Victor Hugo play set in France, but objections by censors led to the shift to Italy. In recent decades, Jonathan Miller's controversial 1982 English National Opera production, filled with Mafioso in New York's Little Italy circa 1950, has been followed by concepts as goofy as relocating the action to "The Planet of the Apes" in a 2005 staging in Munich, Germany.

Rigoletto, the Duke's court jester in Piave's libretto, is transformed by Mayer into a hanger-on and comic along the lines of Don Rickles and Joey Bishop. Monterone's curse created what some may perceive as an anti-Semitic overtone.

Like Franco Zeffirelli with his hyper-realistic sets for the Met's productions of "La Boheme," ''Tosca" and "Turandot" in the 1980s, Mayer, set designer Christine Jones and lighting designer Kevin Adams go for spectacle, sometimes at the expense of clarity.

The Duke's opening "Questa o quella (This or that)" is delivered while clothed in a white tuxedo jacket. He waves an arm and croons into a microphone ? no worries, amplification is not used ? as eight dancers shake large yellow-and-orange feathers. Rigoletto's biting humor is lost in the extravaganza, to some extent evaporating that plotline and the reason for the anger of the Duke's toadies.

The staging settles down after that, with a few silhouetted palm trees in green and gold, enabling the basic story to come through: the kidnapping of Gilda by an entourage mistaking her for Rigoletto's mistress, the lecherous Duke's rape of Gilda, her unwavering crush and her father's quest for revenge. In the calamitous conclusion, she disguises herself in a trench coat and hat, allowing herself to be killed by the hit man her father hired to murder the Duke.

The Duke sings "Possente amor (A great love)" while swilling Scotch from a bottle (one verse only) and "La donna e mobile (Women are fickle)" while swinging around the stripper pole.

Monterone is shot in the head at the Duke's apartment ? which has three chandeliers that are replicas of the ones hanging from the Met's ceiling. Sparafucile's inn becomes a seedy strip club out in the desert.

Mayer, making his opera debut, has a keen eye for detail. Gilda dabs tears from her father's eyes and with an embarrassed look buttons the top of her dress as she speaks with her father. She clutches and smells the white coat the Duke leaves on his apartment floor. While nearly all the Duke's buddies watch stone-faced as Rigoletto pleads, Marullo alone is disgusted, turns away and hangs his head.

Susan Hilferty's costumes had the Duke looking dashing, Rigoletto frumpy and Gilda girlish. The supporting cast was top-notch, with Stefan Kocan a vocally and visually imposing Sparafucile and Maria Zifchak a spineless Giovanna. In their Met debuts, Robert Pomakov was a booming Monterone and Oksana Volkova a seductive Maddalena. Emalie Savoy, in a floor-length gown, was a standard for glamour as Countess Ceprano.

Conductor Michele Mariotti impressed, drawing color, energy and dynamics from the orchestra.

Mayer's interjection of a half-naked stripper at the start of the third act was greeted with cheers ? and then countered quickly by a few loud boos. His decision to have the sycophant group remain in the back of the Duke's apartment in the shadows during Gilda's confessional "Tutte le feste (Each holy day)" was jarring, and there the chorus remained through Damrau's chilling high note that ended the "Si, vendetta" duet.

Marring the evening were gimmicky updated Met Titles by Michael Panayos and Paul Cremo. Mayer's direction spoke for itself. No need for the chorus' "Vittoria!" to become "Jackpot!" and Sparafucile's "further on the stream is deeper" to be replaced by "it's a long drive to the river. Make sure you have enough gas!" Some in the audience giggled.

There are seven more performances with this cast through Feb. 23, with the Feb. 16 matinee telecast to theaters around the world. It returns for six nights in April and May with different principal singers. It will be interesting to see how Mayer's vision comes across with other casts.

ZTE V81 tablet shows up in website ahead of MWC, touts 8inch display and Jelly Bean

Not quite content with the release of its Grand S earlier this month, ZTE looks to be preparing a new tablet to go along with that aforementioned flagship handset. The V81 -- which will presumably make its official debut at this year's Mobile World Congress -- is, according to the company's own website, said to be boasting an 8-inch (1,024 X 768) display with a dual-core, 1.4GHz CPU (mum's the word on chipset specifics), 1GB RAM and 4GB of internal storage that can be expanded to up to 32GB via microSD. Speaking of which, other listed incisions include a full-size USB and HDMI, while a 3,700 mAh battery and Android Jelly Bean are also part of the relatively decent spec sheet. Naturally, pricing and availability details are still slim, but it shouldn't be too long before we learn more on that front -- in the meantime, there's a gallery filled with V81 press shots after the break for you to peruse over.

(Photo by Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP Images, File)

(AP) ? The World Anti-Doping Agency called the UCI "deceitful" Tuesday for shutting down its independent doping panel and said it won't participate in an amnesty commission set up by the cycling governing body.

WADA said the UCI has "again chosen to ignore its responsibility to the sport" by disbanding the panel looking into claims that cycling leaders helped cover up Lance Armstrong's suspicious doping tests and accepted $125,000 in donations from him.

Instead, the UCI announced Monday plans to set up a separate amnesty-style "truth and reconciliation commission" (TRC) that it claimed was supported by WADA President John Fahey.

"This is not only wrong in content and process, but again deceitful," WADA said in a statement. "The fact is that WADA was awaiting a reply to the correspondence when the UCI release was delivered.

"WADA has not and will not consider partaking in any venture with UCI while this unilateral and arrogant attitude continues."

The anti-doping agency added that it will not "pay for or contribute to any collaborative effort with UCI into investigating UCI's long-standing problems with doping in its sport and its alleged complicity."

UCI President Pat McQuaid issued a response Tuesday to the WADA statement, which he called "blatant and aggressive misrepresentations," and released private email exchanges with the agency.

"The UCI is perplexed that WADA has now chosen to rebuff and attack the UCI's willingness to establish a TRC, having just demanded that the UCI establish exactly such a commission," McQuaid said in a statement.

McQuaid claimed that Fahey supported the independent panel being replaced by a TRC, and released an email that included the anti-doping chief saying the "process should start over from a new beginning."

McQuaid urged Fahey to set aside his apparent "personal vendetta and crusade against cycling" and support the TRC.

"Our aims are the same: to rid cycling and indeed all sports of the scourge of doping," McQuaid said.

"The UCI is determined not to dwell on WADA's inconsistent behavior," he added. "We wish to reaffirm our commitment to establishing the TRC."

Accusations against the UCI emerged in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency report that detailed doping and led to Armstrong being stripped of his seven Tour de France titles. Armstrong recently confessed to doping after years of denials.

In justifying the reason to disband the independent panel, the UCI cited WADA's refusal to cooperate with the inquiry.

But WADA on Tuesday said it would not participate because of the "inadequacies of the terms of reference and the timelines." It also didn't want the UCI to scrutinize or edit the findings before they were released.

WADA said it hopes the UCI's independent commission will still meet as previously planned on Thursday, despite being disbanded. The three-person body said Tuesday the UCI never provided the cooperation ? promised by McQuaid ? to allow it to function.

"This failure to cooperate makes our task impossible," the commission, which was chaired by British judge Philip Otton, said in a statement. "Therefore, the proposed hearing on (Jan. 31) will not take place."

China Considering End To Video Game Console Ban | Geekosystem

Good news for Chinese gamers! China is thinking about lifting its ban on game consoles. The news is just speculation right now, and it?s based on the Playstation 3 receiving a quality certification from the Chinese government, but even that speculation has been enough to bump up stock prices for Sony and Nintendo, both of which are champing at the bit to enter the Chinese market.?Obviously, a lifting of the ban would help those companies greatly. It might also destroy the mental and physical development of Chinese children, since that?s what the ban was trying to protect.

The ban was put into place in 2000 by seven ministries of the Chinese government, and there seem to be conflicting reports from those ministries about the future of the ban. An unidentified source at the Ministry of Culture was quoted in the China Daily saying, ?We are reviewing the policy and have conducted some surveys and held discussions with other ministries on the possibility of opening up the game console market.?

Meanwhile, a semi-identified source only calling himself ?Bai? at the ministry?s cultural market department said, ?The ministry is not considering lifting the ban.?

Lenovo managed to sneak their Eedoo CT510 system into the Chinese market despite the ban last year. The Eedoo is similar to the Xbox Kinect, and senses a user?s motion to control the games, so Lenovo billed it as an ?exercise and entertainment machine.? It stands to reason that other consoles could make the same argument for things like Wii Fit and Playstation Move.

Whether the rumors are true or not, Nintendo has already seen a 3.5% increase in their share price, and Sony shares are selling up 8% at the moment ? largely on happy thoughts, the raw fuel of the stock market.

Leah's engaged and pregnant on 'Teen Mom 2'

By Drusilla Moorhouse, TODAY contributor

MTV

Jeremy and Leah are expecting a new baby!

We begin Monday's "Teen Mom 2" recap with another real-time rundown in the soap opera starring Jenelle Evans: Since announcing her pregnancy last week, the reality trainwreck filed assault charges against her husband, reunited with her bad-boy ex (does Jenelle have any good-guy boyfriends?) Gary Head and reportedly miscarried. Surely her evil (angelic?) twin will arrive any moment?

Enough with the spoilers! On the latest episode of "Teen Mom 2" ...

The Cabin in the Woods: Leah is whisked away by her boyfriend, Jeremy, to a deluxe vacation cabin that even has a hot tub on the back deck! While Jeremy declares, "I'll definitely be soaking my butt in that," Leah retires alone to bed. (What?! Keep reading.)

The next morning, Jeremy treats the young mama to her very first breakfast in bed and her second bouquet of flowers -- with an attached card reading, "Will you marry me?" Aw. Romantic, yes, but can anything top her first husband's proposal? Corey took Leah fishing and had her reel in her engagement ring. Classy!

Time to talk kids! Leah, practically middle-aged at 20, doesn't want to "wait 10 years" (or until she's grown out of her retainer) before having another baby. In related news, Leah admits to her appalled friend Kayla that she removed her IUD and seems to be experiencing morning sickness. With MTV filming everything but her bathroom breaks, Leah takes an in-home pregnancy test and shares the happy news with her twin toddlers: a baby sibling is on the way. (Spoiler alert: Heartbreak results, followed by more joyful tidings.)

Who's Your Daddy? Jenelle enjoys another TV-friendly outing with her son, Jace, taking him to a children's museum. There her girlfriends entertain the tiny tot by re-enacting Jenelle's latest roommate clash with puppets: "Hi, I'm Amber, and I'm a b----!" (Because Jace isn't treated to enough screaming profanity at home.)

Jenelle is surprised by a 12-step "amends"-style call from Andrew, her absentee baby daddy. Or is he? Turns out she hooked up with BFF Tori's boyfriend after a "physical argument" with Andrew a month before she got pregnant. (Headdesk.)?"I felt really slutty afterwards," she admits about hiding the secret. When Jenelle proposes a paternity test, Andrew jumps at the chance. He's years behind in child support (although not as much as he thought, considering he thought his 2-year-old was 3), and he "literally, 100 percent" doesn't think he's Jace's dad. ?

Barbershop: Forget Snip-its for Kids: For their son's very first haircut, Kailyn and Jo take Isaac to a bare bones men's barbershop. Kailyn nervously hovers over her son, apparently terrified he's going to sob like Anne Hathaway in "Les Miz" (he doesn't), and is annoyed that Jo is indifferently texting. (Or is he live-tweeting the important event, ? la Jenelle and her supposed miscarriage?)

Thank goodness for Javi, Kailyn's very own Jeremy -- devoted, romantic and eager to capture the attention of the MTV film crew. "You're going to be my best friend," vows Kail's future teen husband, not at all stalkery. At least he isn't begging her to have another baby?

Weird Science: Chelsea sobs in her cheetah sheets because she's not celebrating baby daddy Adam's birthday with him. Rinse and repeat. Somehow she manages to pull herself together and take her math and science GED tests. "Pass or fail, it's a milestone," her proud papa says on her cell phone, which she's holding to her ear while driving in the ice and snow.

Bioinspired fibers change color when stretched

Jan. 28, 2013 ? A team of materials scientists at Harvard University and the University of Exeter, UK, have invented a new fiber that changes color when stretched. Inspired by nature, the researchers identified and replicated the unique structural elements that create the bright iridescent blue color of a tropical plant's fruit.

The multilayered fiber, described January 28 in the journal Advanced Materials, could lend itself to the creation of smart fabrics that visibly react to heat or pressure.

"Our new fiber is based on a structure we found in nature, and through clever engineering we've taken its capabilities a step further," says lead author Mathias Kolle, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). "The plant, of course, cannot change color. By combining its structure with an elastic material, however, we've created an artificial version that passes through a full rainbow of colors as it's stretched."

Since the evolution of the first eye on Earth more than 500 million years ago, the success of many organisms has relied upon the way they interact with light and color, making them useful models for the creation of new materials. For seeds and fruit in particular, bright color is thought to have evolved to attract the agents of seed dispersal, especially birds.

The fruit of the South American tropical plant, Margaritaria nobilis, commonly called "bastard hogberry," is an intriguing example of this adaptation. The ultra-bright blue fruit, which is low in nutritious content, mimics a more fleshy and nutritious competitor. Deceived birds eat the fruit and ultimately release its seeds over a wide geographic area.

"The fruit of this bastard hogberry plant was scientifically delightful to pick," says principal investigator Peter Vukusic, Associate Professor in Natural Photonics at the University of Exeter. "The light-manipulating architecture its surface layer presents, which has evolved to serve a specific biological function, has inspired an extremely useful and interesting technological design."

Vukusic and his collaborators at Harvard studied the structural origin of the seed's vibrant color. They discovered that the upper cells in the seed's skin contain a curved, repeating pattern, which creates color through the interference of light waves. (A similar mechanism is responsible for the bright colors of soap bubbles.) The team's analysis revealed that multiple layers of cells in the seed coat are each made up of a cylindrically layered architecture with high regularity on the nano- scale.

The team replicated the key structural elements of the fruit to create flexible, stretchable and color-changing photonic fibers using an innovative roll-up mechanism perfected in the Harvard laboratories.

"For our artificial structure, we cut down the complexity of the fruit to just its key elements," explains Kolle. "We use very thin fibers and wrap a polymer bilayer around them. That gives us the refractive index contrast, the right number of layers, and the curved, cylindrical cross-section that we need to produce these vivid colors."

The researchers say that the process could be scaled up and developed to suit industrial production.

"Our fiber-rolling technique allows the use of a wide range of materials, especially elastic ones, with the color-tuning range exceeding by an order of magnitude anything that has been reported for thermally drawn fibers," says coauthor Joanna Aizenberg, Amy Smith Berylson Professor of Materials Science at Harvard SEAS, and Kolle's adviser. Aizenberg is also Director of the Kavli Institute for Bionano Science and Technology at Harvard and a Core Faculty Member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard.

The fibers' superior mechanical properties, combined with their demonstrated color brilliance and tunability, make them very versatile. For instance, the fibers can be wound to coat complex shapes. Because the fibers change color under strain, the technology could lend itself to smart sports textiles that change color in areas of muscle tension, or that sense when an object is placed under strain as a result of heat.

Additional coauthors included Alfred Lethbridge at the University of Exeter, Moritz Kreysing at Ludwig Maximilians University (Germany), and Jeremy B. Baumberg, Professor of Nanophotonics at the University of Cambridge (UK).

This research was supported by the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative, by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and through a postdoctoral research fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The researchers also benefited from facilities at the Harvard Center for Nanoscale Systems, which is part of the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation. The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard also contributed to this research.

Israelis offer a 'Yom Huledet Sameach' to Ben Yehuda, resurrector of Hebrew language

Eliezer Ben Yehuda, who transformed Hebrew from the rusty language of ancient Israel and the Bible into the dynamic, dominant language of modern-day Israel, would be 155 years old today.

By Christa Case Bryant,?Staff Writer / January 8, 2013

This December, 2012 photo shows visitors at the Mahane Yehuda market, one of Jerusalem's free tourist attractions. Beyond its earthly past, Jerusalem has an impossible beauty with broad appeal. For residents and tourists, secular and religious souls, city slickers or nature lovers, there is always an unexplored alleyway, street corner or vista that will show you the city as you?ve never seen it before.

Since I?m a new journalist in Israel who happens to love ice cream and arrived here with only one piece of furniture to my name, that would be grave indeed.

So I for one am grateful for Mr. Ben Yehuda, who was born 155 years ago today in the Russian empire.

Legend has it that the man was not only brilliant, but a little crazy. And you would have to be, if you were planning to try to resurrect an ancient language after roughly 2,000 years and expect it to become the primary spoken language of a country that didn't even exist yet.

But the Sorbonne-educated Ben Yehuda did just that ??well before the state of Israel was founded in 1948, and even before Lord Balfour of Britain made his famous promise to the Zionists in 1917 to help establish a Jewish homeland.

Of course, Hebrew was the language of the Torah ? the biblical books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy ? as well as other religious writings. So many Jews were familiar with it. But they didn?t use it to talk about things like grocery shopping or even politics.

Where to start? With your family, of course. When Ben Yehuda arrived in Israel with his family, he banned his wife and children from speaking any other language. According to tradition, his family was the first to speak exclusively Hebrew in the home.

He also helped start schools and Hebrew-language newspapers, and published the first dictionary of modern Hebrew, often drawing on biblical words to coin modern terms. Ultra-Orthodox Jews pushed back hard, arguing that Hebrew is a holy language and not to be used to discuss the mundane. Many of them still prefer to speak in Yiddish when discussing daily affairs.

But Hebrew is nevertheless the dominant language in Israel today, although Arabic is an official language as well.

But I digress.

You were wondering about how to order ice cream, right?

G'lida. That?s your ticket.

Todah (thank you), Ben Yehuda.

Thomas: No sympathy for steroids-tainted stars

(AP) ? Retired Chicago White Sox slugger Frank Thomas feels even better about his career after watching steroids-tainted stars Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Roger Clemens fail to gain entry to the Hall of Fame.

"I think I've done enough to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer," he said Saturday at the team's fan convention.

"Watching all the nonsense unfold and not really knowing what was going on, it makes me much more proud of my career," he said. "I competed in that era. I played at a high level in that era. There are a lot of great players, but as it unfolds, a lot of it was not the real deal. I know 100 percent I was the real deal."

Bonds, Sosa and Clemens were denied in their first year of eligibility amid suspicions by some voters that their accomplishments were boosted by performance-enhancing drugs. Mark McGwire, 10th on the career home run list, received 16.9 percent of the vote on his seventh try, far short of the 75 percent needed for election.

"I wouldn't say I feel bad for them," Thomas said. "I respected them on the field, but they chose this. They made their own decisions off the field and they've got to live with it."

He said their numbers were "incredible" but "fake."

"Any time you look at the PED situation, you look at the Lance Armstrong situation ? you look at stuff like that, it's serious out there," Thomas said. "Thank God I'm blessed I did it the right way. I had a good family base that made me outwork everybody else because that's the only way I made it to the big leagues."

A two-time American League MVP with a .301 average and 521 homers, will join Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine as first-time eligible on the ballot sent to voters this autumn.

Thomas was surprised Craig Biggio did not gain election despite having 3,060 hits. Biggio appeared on 68.2 percent of the 569 ballots and fell 39 votes shy.

Thomas thinks baseball's drug-testing is on the right path. Players will be tested for human growth hormone throughout the regular season following blood testing during spring training last year. Those are in addition to urine tests.

"There won't be any more scandals. Baseball is going to be 100 percent clean," Thomas said. "They're going to have to be."

(AP) ? With a world title and an Olympic silver medal of their own already, Meryl Davis and Charlie White were quite happy to share this latest accomplishment.

Davis and White won their fifth straight ice dance crown at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Saturday, matching a record held by four other couples. As the audience stood and cheered, Davis knelt close to the ice for several seconds, her head bowed.

"Being in such an elite group of American ice dancers from the past and seeing that we belong with them, it's special," White said. "All the hard work and our families and their dedication, our support group ? you need a lot of things to come together to make that happen, including staying healthy. There are a lot of little things. I'm proud of us for being able to stick with it, and our continuing love for the sport has helped a lot.

"I'm pleased and I couldn't be more proud."

Judy Schwomeyer and James Sladky (1968-72); Judy Blumberg and Michael Seibert (1981-85); Naomi Lang and Peter Tchernyshev (1999-2003); and Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto (2004-2008) also won five straight titles.

Elizabeth Punsalan and Jerod Swallow also won five, but not in consecutive years.

The Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions had had such a big lead after the short dance they had to do little more but step on the ice to win. But they did so much more than that with their dramatic and powerful routine to "Notre Dame de Paris," setting personal bests for both overall score (197.44 points) and free dance (118.42).

They finished more than 20 points ahead ? yes, you read that right ? of Madison Chock and Evan Bates (175.91). Maia and Alex Shibutani were docked a point for an extended lift and finished third (174.21).

Earlier Saturday, Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir overcame a big mistake to win their first pairs title.

"Coming to the U.S. Championships is a good time and there's always a positive energy," Davis said. "It's such an honor to come here. I think being able to perform really well pushes us to put out a better performance, and we are honored to get the results that we did."

For generations, Americans weren't even an afterthought in ice dance. They were so far below the world powerhouses it's a good bet the Russians and British didn't even know their names.

But that has changed in the last 10 years, and Davis and White now set the standard in the sport. Their rivalry with Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir is the best thing going, with the training partners playing a game of "Can you top this?" Virtue and Moir edged the Americans at the Vancouver Olympics, as well as at the 2010 and 2012 world championships. The Americans won the world title in 2011, as well as the last four Grand Prix finals.

Though they have no peers in the United States, that doesn't mean they coast when they come to nationals.

Far from it.

"That energy only pushes us and makes us feel even more excited," Davis said.

Their performance was spellbinding, so intense no one in the arena dared breathe. Every inch of the ice, every nuance of music was filled with intricate and elegant moves, one more difficult than the next. Their skating skills have always been superb, their edge quality so fine that coaches pop in DVDs of them to show their students.

But it is the way they combine the athletic strengths with the beauty and elegance of a dance that makes them so breathtaking. They are a sporting event and a theater show rolled into one. Their lifts can barely be described they were so intricate and innovative. In one, White twirled Davis like a rifle and whipped her from his front to back all while skating and turning at full speed.

They oozed emotion, using the tips of their eyelashes all the way down to the toes of their feet to express the character of the dance, and the audience was as exhausted as Davis and White when they finished.

Chock and Bates and the Shibutanis have the misfortune of trying to compete with that, and there was no way they could come close. At least, not now.

Chock and Bates' lifts are filled with unique positions, and they were done with great speed and control. But it was the love story they displayed to "Dr. Zhivago" that was so delightful. Close your eyes, and you could almost see the horses and the sleigh in the falling snow.

"It's been such a great season," Chock said. "We have been working very hard, and we hope to keep getting better and better from here."

The Shibutanis' routine to "Memoirs of a Geisha" was seamless, the elements flowing from one to the other so perfectly it was impossible to tell where one ended and the next began. The siblings opened with a pairs spin that was better than anything seen during the actual pairs competition earlier in the afternoon, and it lasted for what seemed like forever ? no easy feat to maintain that speed and momentum.

Their twizzles ? traveling spins ? are, simply, exquisite. They are done in perfect unison, right down to the raising of their arms while they spin. Their big flaw was that he held his sister too long on a lift, a mistake they also made in the short dance.

Meet Wendy S. Melton, CM of Alternative Therapies and Health ...

Jan 25 2013

? ?

283194

Wendy, who has been a member of Helium.com
since February 2007, manages the Alternative Therapies
and Health & Fitness (Other) channels.
She lives in Michigan
and?
has written nearly 400 articles on the site.?

How did you first learn about Helium.com and what?s your favorite aspect of the site? A friend of mine told me about the site. Once I checked it out, I couldn?t wait to get started. My favorite aspect of Helium is that it gives new writers a chance to spread their wings and get feedback on how they can improve. There is a freedom here you can?t find anywhere else. A writer has an opportunity to hone their skills as well as try things outside of their comfort zone.

You have some great health credentials in your bio, including a master?s degree in Natural Health. What drew you to the health field? I have always had a fascination with the nature and how things worked. Actually it started when I was about six. We had an elderly veterinarian who would come to our farm. He would make his rounds and always took me with him. He showed me what plants made animals sick and what plants could be used to help them. For the next ten years, he taught me how to care for our horses and cattle, and even let me help him when our animals were giving birth. It was a great learning experience. I learned so much from him and he taught me the value of discovering new things.

You?re also a certified herbalist. What can you tell us about that? This also goes back to Doc Haimbaugh. He was in educated at Purdue, but before he went to school he learned all of the old ways from another veterinarian who specialized in more natural methods of healing. Learning about herbs and what each one could do was amazing to me. That knowledge stayed with me as I grew, and I eventually began to study herbalogy. I learned at an early age which herbs grew near my home, how to harvest them and also how to prepare them for use. It is amazing what herbs are capable of. I rarely use over-the-counter medications. Doc taught me that nature was my pharmacy, and if I knew how to use what I had available, it was also FREE!

You?re a first responder, too. What?s that like? Being a first responder is interesting. I spent several years coaching baseball and was always having to bandage a knee or ice a sprain. It?s much different though when you are driving and are the first one at the scene of an accident. When I first started, I was afraid I wouldn?t be able to do the job. Then I stumbled upon my first accident. It hits you then how much those people need you. It?s almost like going on autopilot. You know what needs to be done and you do it. There are no questions, just action. When the people are safe and in the hands of paramedics, then you can sit back and shake for a second or two. It?s a good feeling to know you are able to help someone to that degree.

What do you enjoy most about being a channel manager? I have met some of the most interesting people! They have such diverse backgrounds and unique personalities! I have learned a lot from reading all of their articles. I also like the fact that I can help them with their questions and give them encouragement.

Of all the articles you?ve written on the site, which is your favorite and what makes it your favorite? I think my favorite would have to be the one on being a catcher. I was a catcher for several years in softball and I loved the position. I know many kids shy away from it because of how grueling it can be. I hoped that through my article I could inspire people to give the position a try.

Who are your favorite Helium authors and what do you like about their writing? I have two. Mona Gallagher and Melissa R. Bickel are my favorites. I love the topics Mona chooses and Melissa?s poetry is amazing.

What piece of advice would you give to an aspiring writer? Always do your best and to not get discouraged. Starting out on a site like Helium will give them experience they need when trying to break into the world of journalism and writing. Always be willing to learn something new!

What do you enjoy doing when you?re not busy at Helium? I love to sew and cook! I have always loved crafts and making things. I also like to draw. I like teaching my granddaughters how to make things as well.

Your bio mentions one of your favorite memories includes spending time with your horses. Do you still have horses? I live in town now so I don?t have any place for them. I would like to move back to the country at some point. When I do, I most definitely will have them again! We raced sulky horses when I was growing up and I still visit some of the people who still participate in the sport. I really miss it!

Read any good books lately? My favorite book is The Heroin Diaries, by Nikki Sixx. I also like the Dan Brown books. They make you think and ask questions most people are afraid to ask. As for Nikki Sixx, just the fact that he was opened up about so many of his experiences was inspiring. Hopefully his honesty about the dark side of drugs and addiction can help some of his fans avoid the dangers he survived.

Thanks for sharing Wendy!

Democratic support for Hagel grows

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democratic support for Chuck Hagel's nomination for defense secretary grew on Thursday as the former Republican senator allayed concerns about his past statements on Israel and Iran.

Sens. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Chris Coons of Delaware and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire said they met with Hagel this week and were reassured by his commitment to Israel's security.

Hagel would replace Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is stepping down. Despite early misgivings, about a dozen Democrats have announced they would vote for his nomination, and none has declared opposition to President Barack Obama's choice.

Six Republicans have said they would vote against Hagel, with some stating their opposition before Obama announced his pick on Jan. 7.

"Senator Hagel clarified his position on Iran sanctions and Israel, and I am confident he is firmly committed to ensuring a strong U.S.-Israel relationship," Lautenberg said, adding that he and his colleagues will be watching closely "to ensure that issues of concern do not emerge as he takes on this critical position."

Separately, 13 former secretaries of defense and state as well as national security advisers sent a letter to members of the Senate strongly endorsing Hagel. Among them was former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who has worked for Republican and Democratic administrations, and George Schultz and Brent Scowcroft, veterans of GOP administrations.

"For those of us honored to have served as members of a president's national security team, Sen. Hagel clearly understands the essence and the burdens of leadership required of this high office," the former officials wrote.

Hagel, who served two terms as Nebraska senator, has faced opposition from GOP-leaning outside groups over his past statements about the power of the "Jewish lobby" of pro-Israel groups and his doubts about the effectiveness of unilateral sanctions on Iran.

Not one GOP lawmaker has endorsed the nominee. Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., writing in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, all but announced his opposition.

"When we are faced with unpredictable national security crises, we can't afford to have a secretary of defense who has unpredictable judgment," Barrasso wrote.

Other lawmakers have said they are waiting for Hagel's confirmation hearing next Thursday in the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate and would have the votes to confirm Hagel.

"Chuck is a combat veteran and foot soldier who has a unique understanding of the challenges faced by our men and women in uniform, and a practical leader who understands the need for common sense in military spending and national security strategy," Manchin said in a statement.

Coons said he believes Hagel "will be a strong and effective secretary of defense, and I will be proud to vote for his confirmation."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who met with Hagel on Thursday, said he had satisfied her concerns and she felt his responses were sincere. A member of the Armed Services Committee, she said she would reserve judgment until after the hearing but described Hagel as well-qualified for the job.

Their statements came shortly after Sen. John Kerry, the president's choice for secretary of state, found himself defending Hagel at his confirmation hearing.

"I know Chuck Hagel. I think he is a strong patriotic former senator, and he will be a strong secretary of defense," Kerry said of Hagel, who, like Kerry, served in Vietnam.

Republican Sen. Bob Corker questioned Kerry about Hagel's support for an 80 percent reduction of U.S. nuclear weapons. Possible reductions and modernization of the nuclear arsenal are major issues for the Tennessee lawmaker, who has the Y-12 nuclear facility in his state.

Corker has expressed concerns about Hagel, questioning whether the Republican's "overall temperament" makes his suitable for the job.
